ESL Students

The Writing Center is happy to serve students for whom English is a second, or even third or fourth, language. Such students come from many departments at USU. Though some consultants might not be familiar with the subject of your paper, we can still help you improve the clarity of your writing.

Because English is structurally different than many of the languages of the world, we understand that it is a difficult language to learn. Sometimes the rules and concepts are just as hard to explain! For general, online help with your English, please visit the grammar links found on the Resources and Exercises page or visit one of these sites developed specifically for ESL students:

  • St. Cloud State University's online writing center, The Write Place (page by Sharon Cogdill and Judith Kilborn). This section of the online writing center contains a section that gives help specifically for ESL students. This is part of a larger page with other English construction and paper-writing helps.

  • University of Indiana Online Writing Lab. Here is a huge list of grammar worksheets. Look at the bottom of the list for help with articles (a, an, the) and conjunctions (for, to, at, from, in, on, etc.), which are common problems for those learning English.

  • University of New Mexico English Help Center. This part of the Help Center is a collection of explanations about basic aspects of English. At the bottom of the list are two links especially for ESL students, one of which is about articles (a, an, the).
